about longhope

Longhope Opera is a delightful annual event held on the Longhope Estate in Newton Valence, Hampshire. Every Summer since 2015, Mr & Mrs Janson have welcomed several hundred friends to their charming home. Guests take walks around the grounds and peruse the various events on offer before they are entertained with a comic opera from Scherzo Ensemble and enjoy a picnic dinner overlooking the South Downs.

Guests at Longhope have previously enjoyed several gala concerts, The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville and Il turco in Italia . This summer, having wowed thousands of guests since 2018, Scherzo Ensemble returned with their fourth production. To deliver Longhope Opera, Scherzo assembles an entire company (performers, creatives, technical staff and management) of emerging professionals under 30 years old. The central aim is to help young practitioners gain professional experience and build confidence, with the associated aims of fostering deeper respect and understanding between theatrical departments.  These operas at Longhope have become the centre-piece of their annual professional development programme for young artists and this year on the 2nd and 3rd of July they presented a wonderful production of
L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti, conducted by Matthew O'Keeffe and directed by Rory Fazan.

Aside from their work with Longhope Opera, Scherzo Ensemble have several  projects and performances throughout the year. You can enjoy performances by Scherzo at the following upcoming events.

L'ELISIR D'AMORE - 2 & 3 July, 2022
Screenshot 2022-03-19 at 21.41.56.png

L’elisir d’amore, written in 1832 by Gaetano Donizetti and Felice Romani, was the most frequently performed opera in Italy between 1838 and 1848 and one can see why it remains popular in international opera repertory today. L’elisir d’amore follows Adina, the beautiful but capricious landowner, and Nemorino, the clumsy but lovable young man, through the ups and downs of their love story. Nemorino is madly in love with Adina and desperately purchases an “elixir” that will make her fall in love with him whilst Adina continuously holds him at arm’s length and even feigns marriage to the pompous Sergeant Belcore. Donizetti sprinkles this classic comic love story with beautiful bel canto arias, vocal fireworks and rousing ensemble writing.
