Scherzo (charity 1193375) is a professional development platform for young singers who have recently completed their training. There is often a substantial gap between the skills singers have when they graduate and the skills most will need to build a musical career in the 21st century. Scherzo offers a year-long programme of performance and training projects as well as classes in business to a cohort of singers selected annually at audition.
The COVID -19 pandemic has completely changed the landscape for live music, and practitioners have had to find new ways of delivering performance. The classical music industry has shrunk considerably, with fewer institutions and organisations providing artistic work, especially for young performers. Our programme helps emerging artists develop a diverse range of professional skills and seeks to instil artistic and managerial confidence when setting out to realise a project independently for the first time. We believe this focus is necessary to rebuild a vibrant cultural sector.
Our activities include:
- bringing singers together to work collaboratively on suitable repertoire, developing ensemble skills and rehearsal communication techniques.
- offering opportunities to develop the necessary aural skills to perform with orchestras and conductors, often a barrier to excelling in early career breaks.
- guiding singers in researching new material, vital to a freelancer's employability and a contribution to the broadening of the Canon.
- offering basic training in arts-industry business management.

Longhope Opera is a delightful annual event held on the Longhope Estate in Newton Valence, Hampshire. Every Summer since 2015, Mr & Mrs Janson have welcomed several hundred friends to their charming home. Guests take walks around the grounds before they are entertained with a comic opera from Scherzo Ensemble and enjoy a picnic dinner overlooking the South Downs. The opera is the centre-piece of Scherzo Ensemble’s professional development programme for emerging artists, with cast, creatives, orchestra and crew all under the age of 30.
Guests at Longhope have previously enjoyed several gala concerts, The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville. This Summer’s we will continue staging Rossini's comedies with performances of il turco in Italia. Bel Canto opera buffa has proved popular with both our audience and performers. It's a slice of Campanian culture presented in rolling rural Hampshire!
